"I was a founding member of the National Network for Youth and believe it to be the premiere organization for ensuring that homeless and runaway youth get the positive support they need to exit the streets."

Carrie's Story
YouthCare- Seattle, WA

Carrie was asked to leave home by her stepmother when she was 15.

Q:
Did you ever have to live on the streets?
A:
No, I really just went house to house staying with friends. But that didn't last for two long. I've been here for about 2 years. So I was just bouncing house to house for just a couple months
Q:
What was the hardest thing about moving house to house before you got to YouthCare?
A:
Moving your stuff everywhere, and not having all you stuff in one place. You have one here one there, cause you don't know where to take it.
Q:
How did you hear about YouthCare?
A:
I just came and knocked on the door, and asked what was this program. I just kind of came here, cause I used to be around this neighborhood a lot, and I saw teenagers coming here, and wondered what this program was. I asked some kids and they told me all about it, and I wondered could I be one of the lucky ones.
Q:
What are your current goals that you're working towards?
A:
School, graduating from High School, and getting a full time Job. Right now I work at the Y.
Q:
What do you do there?
A:
Childcare, I always work with kids. I used to work in Ballard community center, and Sandpoint community center.
Q:
How has YouthCare helped you the most?
A:
It helped me in a lot of ways. Wanted to focus on my school. Another one is it teach me to live with other races, teenagers, and it helped me with a lot of life skills. Like how to be independent, how to manage my money, so many life skills.
Q:
Where do you think you'd be if you hadn't gotten involved in YouthCare.
A:
Just doing the same thing, just moving from one place to another. I would be focusing in school. Probably struggling.
Q:
What programs have you worked with within YouthCare?
A:
This housing, and TREC.
Q:
If you had to pick one YouthCare staff member who has helped you the most, who would it be?
A:
Cory, she always come around and has helped me with a couple scholarships and every time I want to talk to her I feel like I could talk to her better then any other staff. Cause she'll just listen to you. She will tell you how she really thinks, other staff will just, if you tell them if you had a bad day they will tell other staff "oh Carrie had a bad day". She doesn't keep privet stuff, like I am doing to kill myself, she will tell people that, cause she has to.
Q:
For the future, what goals do you have?
A:
Therese a couple things I'm thinking about. One of them is being, like a therapy, like you know, one on one kind of thing. Most of all I want to work with teenagers. Oh, and I like to be a chef. Its one of those three that I'm looking into.
Q:
Where would you like to be in 5 years?
A:
I'm not sure, but I know that I want to be out of this state. I'd like to move to Atlanta, Georgia or New York or something.
Q:
Is there anything else you'd like to add?
A:
No, well just that I think this program is good if you would like to achieve some of the goals that I would like to achieve.
