National Council on Youth Policy

The National Council on Youth Policy (NCYP) is a committee of the National Network for Youth’s Board of Directors. The NCYP is composed of a Chair and Vice Chair, 10 Regional Representatives and up to ten at-large members. All members of the NCYP must be employees from an agency whose membership is in good standing or be individual members in good standing who are not affiliated with a member agency. All NCYP positions, with the exception of Chair and Vice-Chair, serve for two year terms. Youth are eligible to run for a position if they are of the appropriate age at the time of election at the National Network for Youth’s Annual Meeting.

The primary responsibilities of the NCYP are to:

  • Guide and inform the National Network for Youth’s Public Policy agenda in partnership with the Board of Directors
  • Receive and respond to membership issues and recommendations that would result in changes to the Network’s Guiding Principles
  • Act as the primary mobilizer for the advocacy efforts of the Network by actively advocating for the Network’s policy agenda and engaging other members of the Network in advocating for the same
  • Collect input from members regarding the impact of Federal law or policy issues, current social conditions, and other factors impacting the delivery of services to Runaway and Homeless (RH) Youth and act on that input to inform the Board of Directors regarding potential direction for the Network’s public policy agenda and other activities.
Members of the NCYP are elected by the membership of the National Network for Youth. Regional Representative positions are elected by Network members within the region that candidates are running to represent. The National Network for Youth shall collect nominations from all candidates interested in representing a region, and solicit votes from members in that region through e-mail balloting. Where applicable, the National Network for Youth shall work with designated Regional membership organizations to facilitate this process. All balloting for Regional Representatives shall be completed prior to the Network’s Annual meeting to be held at Symposium on January 25th 2010.
All at-large positions are elected from the slate of candidates by the members present at the Annual Meeting. Whenever possible, it is desirable for all candidates to be present at the Annual Meeting. The first meeting of the newly elected NCYP will take place at Symposium. Dates for meetings in the coming year will be established at this meeting, so it is important to plan on attending Symposium if you are planning to run for a NCYP position.
