What is H1N1 (Swine) Flu?

  • Novel H1N1 is a new influenza virus that is spread from person-to-person, through respiratory droplets from coughs and sneezes and sometimes by touching infected objects then touching your nose or mouth.
  • The H1N1 virus is a hybrid, with genetic elements of swine influenza, avian influenza, and human influenza.
  • Statistics show that persons younger than 25 may be particularly susceptible to H1N1 virus, creating the potential for a large number of cases with more hospitalizations and more deaths in this age group.
