Horizons for Youth does more than put a roof over teens' heads

Horizons for Youth goes above and beyond its mandate to provide food and shelter to homeless teens.
This is because being a homeless teen means a lot more than not having a place to call home. Often teens arrive with a plethora of other issues and needs, said Filomena Williams, executive director of Horizons for Youth.

Situated in North York, Horizons for Youth caters to teens and young adults 16 to 24, and is one of only nine city-run youth shelters in Toronto.

Gay Youth Homeless Shelter Vandalized

On Wednesday night, a gay youth homeless shelter was vandalized with anti-gay graffiti that read; "We don't want gay people here."

The shelter, located in Queens, is operated by New York City's Ali Forney Center, the nation's largest organization serving homeless LGBT youth. "Gay shelter" was also scrawled on the building's door.

Comedian, singer, actress, and author Sandra Bernhard will be among the speakers at a rally at Union Square in support of the LGBT Homeless Youth, to be held on Monday, June 14 at 6:30pm.

The rally will also include speeces by Iraq Combat Veteran and gay rights activist Dan Choi, as well as youth representatives from various organizations serving young LGBT people.
