Youth now have a stronger voice than ever in shaping issues and supporting candidates. The National Council on Youth Policy (NCYP) is working to ensure that homeless and runaway youth are an integral part of the voice of young people nationally. In doing this, we hope to ensure that the issues that matter to them are also the issues that matter to their elected officials.
We are encouraging our agencies to register homeless and runaway youth to vote. We started at Symposium with a voter registration table, youth voter registration workshop, and resources for agencies. We continue our efforts through a partnership with YouthNoise.org, educating youth on the candidates and the issues and registering voters through Declare Yourself.
We’re excited to announce Homeless Youth Voter Registration Weeks. During these weeks, we are encouraging agencies to focus on registering their youth to vote and offering resources for voter registration.
Mark your calendars—Homeless Youth Voter Registration Weeks Are:
- June 30 – July 6
- September 22- September 29th
We are providing agencies with tools to get this process started, including:
- A tip sheet for agencies on registering homeless youth to vote
- A resource list of organizations which focus on youth civic engagement and voting
- Some curriculum materials to use with your youth to engage them in the process.
In the near future, we will be tracking youth registered to vote through the NN4Y website. Make sure the youth voice is heard! Do your part to register young people and encourage them to vote. For more information, contact Jeremy at National Network at jbfranklin@nn4youth.org.
